Featured here is an antique mask from the Tshokwe (or Tchokwe) tribe in Congo (formerly Zaire). The Tshokwe are a small ethnic group that originated in Angola but have now migrated into the southern central part of Congo. All masks are worn by men, though they often depict female ancestor spirits. This mask is used in the “makunda” initiation rites. It has a “helmet” made of woven raffia covering a frame of woven twigs, extending to cover the back of the head. The eyes are slits. There is a symbolic tribal scarification mark on the forehead. This mask is very old and the basket-helmet is very frail although still intact.
