Here we are featuring a wonderful set of TWO candleholders, hand carved to portray the head-and-shoulders of a Masai warrior and his wife. This is extremely fine, detailed carving, displaying the trade mark symbols of the Masai beadwork and the elongated ear lobes. The carver definitely captured the majestic pride and independence of these resilient warrior people of the African plain.
The carving was done by the world-famous masters of wood: the Makonde Tribe of southern Tanzania, using only simple hand tools of axes, various-sized knives, files and sandpaper.. The Makonde craftsman carved each candleholder from a single piece of ebony wood, which is an exceptionally hard and richly dark wood found at the borderland strip along the tropical regions in certain sections of Africa. Ebony’s exceptional density makes it both heavy and beautiful in its black, glossy sheen when polished. These candleholders are absolutely beautiful and in perfect condition! My camera just is not able to do justice to these pieces. But I warn you your friends will covet these when they see them displayed in your home!
Each candleholder stands more than 11 inches tall X 2 inches in diameter. The set weighs almost two pounds, as ebony is an extremely heavy wood.
