Necklace - 9 Strand Blue & Brass Teardrops

Here we are featuring a beautiful necklace made of Turkana glass beads from northern Kenya, tiny Masai beads and pieces of brass from the Giriama tribe, located in the southern part of the country, along the Indian Ocean. The Maasai actually gather the different items and put the necklace together.

The Maasai people are a proud and resilient warrior people of the African plains, mainly located in central Kenya and Tanzania. They are famous for their fierce warrior abilities, their respect and love for cattle, and their intricate and colorful beadwork adornment. The beading skills and traditional patterns are passed from mother to daughter, from one generation to the next. Working outside while keeping careful watch on their young children, these women create delicate, multi-colored bracelets, necklaces and headbands, which are worn by both men and women, for every day and for special occasions and feasts.

There are 42 different tribes in Kenya and all of them have distinct traditions and customs, which are an important part of their lives. This Kenyan craft woman has taken traditional elements and designs of various ethnic groups in Africa and put them together to create new jewelry of new and stunning designs.

This necklace is approx. 17 inches in length.
