Click to enlargeTeak Skeleton Couples 18 inches

This item is a set of two “skeleton” people or “mosquito” people. These are hand carved to portray an African village man and his wife, in traditional dress. The woman is carrying a baby on her back, as most African mamas do.

The carving was done by one of the world-famous masters of wood: the Makonde Tribe of southern Tanzania, using only simple hand tools of axes, various-sized knives and sandpaper. The Makonde craftsman carved each figure from a single piece of rich, dark teak wood, which is an exceptionally hard and richly grained wood found in the borderland strip along the tropical areas in certain sections of Central Africa.

Each figure is approx. 16-18 inches tall and is just over an inch in diameter.
