This beautiful, one-of-a kind, work of art is an original wax batik in which the artist created a typical Kenya scene of a rural village open-air market. Market Day is an occasion for busy commerce and friendly socializing. This is shown in this colorful batik, as it shows people selling coconuts, mangos, oranges and chatting together. The more you look at this picture, the more you see. Deep gold, brown and red shades of natural dyes are shown in this unique piece of art, with yellow being the prevalent color in the background. This batik was made by a Kikuyu artist from the Rift Valley area. This cloth is approx. 17 in. wide x 28 in. long. Sale does not include frame.

Batik-making is the intricate art of coloring cotton fabric in which parts of the fabric are covered with liquid wax, and then immersed into colored dye. Only the un-waxed portion of the cloth absorbs the color. The wax is then removed by the cloth being placed in hot water. Then the whole process is repeated over and over, to create the multi-colored motif. Obviously this art requires many long, hot hours to complete…usually over a charcoal fire. In Kenya, it is the Kikuyu tribe who are famous for producing exquisite batiks.
